Jordan Woods trail completion to be celebrated April 28
April 18, 2013
The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District invites the public on April 28 to a celebration of its new quarter-mile trail connecting Jackie Husen Park to the Jordan Woods Natural Area.
This special event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. and include food, prizes and information tables. In addition, the THPRD Nature Mobile and Rec Mobile will both be there with fun activities for children. A brief ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for 2 p.m.
Meeting place will be Jackie Husen Park, 10955 NW Reeves Street, Portland, in the Cedar Mill area. Parking will be available there and on the street. The park and new trail provide ready access to the Jordan Woods Natural Area.
The celebration is planned in conjunction with a regularly scheduled “Nature Day in the Park” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day. Nature Day, organized by THPRD’s Natural Resources Department, will offer opportunities for children and adults to explore nature and learn about the flora and fauna of Jordan Woods.
THPRD staff and volunteers will lead interactive, nature-based tasks, and a park ranger will be on hand to answer questions. For more information about Nature Day, call 503/629-6350.
Funded by THPRD’s 2008 voter-approved bond measure, the new Jordan Woods Trail is eight feet wide and paved to ensure ADA accessibility. It replaced unpaved and unmaintained trails. By design, the trail protects significant trees and limits encroachment into sensitive creek and wetland areas, which in turn benefits wildlife.
As part of the project, THPRD also created an overlook, two pedestrian bridges, a boardwalk, three trail access points, and secondary soft-surface trails as part of the project, which took nearly one year to build. The trail opened to the public March 8.
