Sustainability
The district's sustainability efforts are grounded in the belief that it is our daily responsibility to be good stewards of our resources. The incorporation of environmental and financial sustainability principles is one of eight umbrella goals that guided the 2013 Comprehensive Plan Update.
THPRD strives daily to meet current community needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Our stewardship efforts entail:
Using resources and materials wisely. We will work toward being an agency whose activities are climate-neutral, produce zero waste, and generate no hazardous substances. Our activities will include considering sustainable alternatives to some practices or products that may cost more initially but should pay off in the long run. We currently source 100% of our electricity from renewable resources through PGE’s Clean Wind and Green Source programs, and we conduct an annual greenhouse gas emissions inventory.
Respecting and conserving natural systems. We will strive to protect habitats, wildlife, and ecosystem functions. Staff will provide appropriate levels of planning, protection, and low-impact development to these areas to support and preserve them. Staff will also look for opportunities to reduce stormwater run-off and pollution, such as through bioswales or pervious pavement.
Educating ourselves and our patrons. We will consider the lifecycle effects of our purchasing and operations on people and the environment, both locally and globally. We have implemented a sustainable purchasing policy to ensure we include sustainability criteria in our purchasing processes and service contracts. We are also a member of Partners for a Sustainable Washington County Community.
