Committee recommends name for new community park
At their April 11 meeting, THPRD’s board of directors reached general agreement on a permanent name for the new Southwest Quadrant Community Park. This 21.5-acre park, located in Aloha near 170th Ave. and Farmington Rd., will open to the public later this year.
“Mountain View Champions Park” aligns with naming guidelines established by an eight-member volunteer naming committee led by Chet Orloff, director emeritus of the Oregon Historical Society and longstanding member of the Oregon Geographic Names Board. The committee's recommendation was informed by a public outreach process (which yielded more than 500 entries) and the collective expertise of committee members.
The geographic and thematic nature of the name ensures permanence; the name will remain relevant even while the community grows and changes. The name also offers room for storytelling about the immediate area as well as the community "champions" that have rallied to build, program the site, and those who will recreate at this unique site designed for people of all abilities.
THPRD staff will ask the board to adopt the "Mountain View Champions Park" name at their May 9 meeting.
